Competency Based Training on Power Quality & Harmonics

Online Training

Add to calendar:

Earn 7 CPD Points for ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING COUNCIL

This training is focused on power quality issues that affects the electrical system’s operations, more importantly when harmonic frequencies and its harmonic current and voltage affect the Distribution System that contributes to losses. The Grid Code requires, commercial, highrise residential buildings, industrial plants, and Utilities to comply within the Standards. The increasing demand and applications of non-linear load in industries nowadays greatly affects the quality of the power system. This program will enhance the knowledge and practices of facility managers, maintenance and technical people at site and more importantly to save energy.

Course Highlights:

  • Power Quality Problems & Solutions
  • Harmonic Distortion & Control
  • Hands-on Training with Power Quality Analyzers
  • Transformer K Factor Rating

Who Should Attend?

  • Electrical Engineers
  • Substation Engineers
  • Engineering Staff & Faculty
  • Test Engineers & Cadet Engineers

At the end of the program, the participants will be able to:

  • Familiarize with the different power quality issues and perspectives.
  • Identify different power quality problems.
  • Specify solutions for a particular power quality problem.
  • Understand the cause and effect of harmonics to electrical system.
  • Identify the ways to mitigate the effects of harmonics.
  • Design a harmonic filter.
  • Specify the transformer K factor rating.
  • Understand the usage of power quality analyzer.

AM Session

  • Understand and learn the effects of harmonics in the system when it gets high.
  • Electric Power Quality
  • Harmonics Primer Waveform Fundamentals
  • Introduction to Harmonics and Reactive Power Compensation

PM Session

  • Measure power quality of an electrical system using a PQ meter and record for analysis. Watch live demonstration on how to conduct such measurements in different parts of the electrical system.
  • Power Quality in Electrical Systems
  • Power Quality Measurement and Evaluation

He has 25 years of accumulated experience in Condition Base and Preventive Maintenance Testing, Power Systems Protection, Electrical System Design and Analysis, Electrical Safety and Technical Sales.

Engr. Alex Castro, PEE

Assistant Vice President – Engineering Services

Westco Electrical & Equipment Corp.

Engr. Castro graduated Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Technological Institute of the Philippines.  He attended trainings on Variable Frequency Drive Control Methods & Applications, Condition Assessment of Electrical Equipment, Power Circuit Breaker Testing & Maintenance.

Some of his achievements in the field are Online bushing monitoring of two (2) units Power Transformer in XIAN ELECTRIC & NGCP (SUBA & AMLAN) substations), Comprehensive Transformer Testing with Dissolved Gas Analysis and comprehensive oil test of 3.75 MVA, 3 phase Power Transformer in Wyeth, Philippines.

Engr. Castro's exposure to testing of substation apparatus, made him an expert in the field; such as power transformers, potential transformers, current transformers, circuit  breakers,  disconnect switches  and  surge  arresters equip him with the technical knowledge and experience to share in his seminars.
